ALLAWAH RAIL OVERBRIDGE REPLACEMENT
Abergeldie was engaged as head contractor to demolish an existing jack arch road bridge over the rail corridor at Allawah and construct a new single span bridge and new approach roads. Extensive relocation of third-party owned utility service lines was required, as well as relocation of rail assets within the live rail corridor.
INNOVATION AND COMPLEXITY
Temporary traffic management including detours, was carefully planned in consultation and with community groups and service providers representatives and implemented to minimise disruption.
A work platform was constructed within the live rail corridor to enable permanent bored piles to be installed for the abutments of the new bridge.
Many elements of the works could only be carried out during weekend rail possession periods within strictly pre-determined time windows. To take maximum advantage of available time within the corridor, and to avoid heavy “late hand back” penalties which could have been occurred should works run over time, programming of works during possession periods was planned in hour by hour detail.
Conformance with Sydney Trains’ rail safe working requirements was strictly observed during works within and immediately beside the rail corridor, with a Rail Protection Officer present for all such work elements.
