THORNTON PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
Design and construction of a steel-framed bridge, access stairs and precast concrete ramps supported on reinforced concrete columns and beams, providing pedestrian access across the busy four lane New England Highway.
The project involved complex design management, integrating full design of bridge foundations, support columns, abutments, ramps and superstructure, as well as lighting and electrical design. Abergeldie engaged Worley Parsons to carry for elements of the detailed design, under the direction of its in-house design manager.
Staging of the works and traffic management were carefully planned in consultation with of local authorities and community stakeholders. The bridge abutments, columns and ramps were constructed immediately adjacent to the New England Highway shoulders, requiring lane closures, while the erection of the bridge span required complete closure of New England Highway and implementation of major detours for large volumes of road traffic.
