CITY ROAD FOOT BRIDGE

Project Description:
Construction of a pedestrian footbridge over City Road at Sydney University. Works included demolition of the existing bridge, piling, in-situ concrete pile caps, piers, headstocks, ramp and stairs, erection of precast girders and deck units, installation of balustrades and handrails.
Complex Challenges:
The client set a very tight time-line, requiring the bridge to be opened in time for the start of the University’s new semester. All possible measures had to be taken to accelerate construction, demanding detailed attention to methodology and works programming.
An added challenge was working immediately above and adjacent to a six lane wide major arterial road. Close consultation was required to schedule partial road closures of one or two lanes at a time to allow work to proceed safely. Only one full road closure was required. This was scheduled at night to enable the partially pre-assembled bridge spans to be lifted into place.
