PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Abergeldie were engaged by Tenix to establish a 66/11kV zone substation with a firm (n-1) transformer capacity of 35MVA and with a dedicated building to house the 11kV switchboard and associated auxiliary equipment. Abergeldie were required to relocate one outdoor 11kV 5MVAr capacitor bank from the existing Camden Zone Substation and install at Nepean Zone Substation. The contract also required Install protection, SCADA, communication and control systems as well as the Installation of 11kV distribution cables.

Complex Challenges:

The Nepean Zone Substation site was located adjacent to busy road, requiring detailed traffic management planned in consultation with local stakeholders and authorities.

Abergeldie were contracted by Tenix for the construction of a new DC substation on Railway Parade Glenfield, south of the CityRail Glenfield Station. The projected included civil works and erection of a reinforced concrete/masonry/steel/precast concrete building with metal cladding and roof.

Restricted work area and difficult street access in a densely built-up inner urban location. Need for community stakeholder and resident liaison regarding construction noise, vibration and traffic management.

Construction of a new electrical substation, including a control building with basement cable jointing room, three transformer bays with fire blast and protection, new driveway and associated external works.

Complex Challenges:

Rigorous attention to safety management controls was essential as much of the work took place adjacent to a live electrical cable. Special environmental controls were also required to protect an endangered species of flora which had been identified near the site.
